Made to Lactate Colostrum Collection Kit from Fed is Best is a complete antenatal expressing kit designed to safely collect, store and organise colostrum before and after birth.

Antenatal colostrum collection made simple and organised

The Made to Lactate Colostrum Collection Kit, available from Fed is Best, is the first of its kind in South Africa. It has been thoughtfully created to help mothers feel calm, prepared, and confident at the very beginning of their breastfeeding journey.

Colostrum is your body’s first milk. It is thick, golden, and naturally rich in antibodies, immune-supporting compounds, and concentrated nutrition. Although it is produced in very small quantities, this is intentional. A newborn’s stomach capacity in the first days of life is only a few millilitres. Therefore, even tiny amounts of colostrum provide powerful protection and nourishment.

Why collect colostrum?

With the approval of your midwife or gynaecologist, many women begin hand expressing from around 36 weeks of pregnancy. Antenatal expressing allows you to gently practise your technique and store small volumes of colostrum ahead of birth.

This can be particularly helpful for:

  • Mothers with gestational diabetes
  • Planned caesarean deliveries
  • Babies expected to require blood sugar monitoring
  • Mothers wanting additional reassurance in the early days

Hand expressing is often gentler than pump use in the first days postpartum. It supports natural milk flow, protects sensitive nipples, and helps you learn how your body responds before breastfeeding is fully established.

Designed for clean, safe storage

This kit allows you to collect and store small measured amounts of colostrum hygienically. The varied syringe sizes make it easy to store even 1ml at a time, preventing waste. Printed labels help keep everything organised and clearly dated for safe hospital storage.

The included 30ml cup with lid provides a convenient vessel for expressing before drawing colostrum into syringes. Because colostrum is thick and sticky, appropriate tools make collection significantly easier.

Hospital bag essential

Many mothers choose to pack this kit in their hospital bag. In the first 24–72 hours after birth, hand expressing can help stimulate milk production, support baby if latching is delayed, or provide expressed colostrum for cup or syringe feeding if medically indicated.

Having a structured collection kit reduces stress during an already emotional time. Instead of scrambling for storage solutions, everything you need is prepared in advance.
